People Are Outraged Over The ‘Racist Name’ Of A New Ramen Restaurant

Racism and sexual harassment are nothing new, sadly as we know. Not sure if I’m shocked these geniuses would name their business after a movie line synonymous with both. I want to be shocked that these two guys are so out of touch. They were really like, “Hey, you know what would be hysterical? A racist name for our restaurant.” Hate to break it to you, you come off as uneducated, unoriginal, extremely unfunny and frankly just two gross human beings. Everyone seems to be upset these dudes are white but no matter what color isn’t this a distasteful act all around?

A new ‘Asian’ restaurant opening in Joburg, owned by non Asians. It covers 3 different cultures: 1.ramen (Japanese), 2.poke (Hawaiian) & 3.Korean BBQ. As an Asian woman, I really hate the name. It might seem funny but when men say it while they sexually harass you it’s not. pic.twitter.com/gAVDiSKFah

Pretty insensitive, eh? Hopefully, for the South African duo, their food is more tasteful than their whack name. I mean I love “Asian” food as much as anyone around! If I were planning on opening an “Asian” inspired restaurant I’d maybe do some research and definitely not be so insufferable and flat-out racist. If you’re not following read the name of the restaurant out loud. MI-SO-HAWNI (me so horny) which gained fame from 1987’s movie Full Metal Jacket based on the Gustav Hasford’s 1979 novel The “Short-Timers.” If you’ve never seen the movie it primarily follows two privates Joker and Pyle. It shows two platoons in the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam war. The derogatory phrase stems from a well-known scene from the movie. Just so we’re all on the same page here’s the clip we’re talking about.

Now, maybe these guys were looking to stir the pot for business purposes. Some people’s morality comes with a price tag and I’m very much aware of that. Their goal could have been being edgy or the “wow” factor.  I just can’t see this move as one that is going to help your business profit it just seems like a lame attempt to be clever, huge swing and a miss fellas.

At the end of the day, people on Twitter just ain’t buying it. Now it isn’t too hard to see why some people aren’t too crazy about the racist name. Even if you didn’t think it would be offensive did you really think this was funny? Really? Going with a rudimentary joke from the ’80s? You can argue the world is more easily offended than ever and I would agree but this was just stupid. Since Twitter has got their hands on the situation the restaurant has deactivated their facebook page. Their Twitter account remains alive and kickin’ so a few folks are chiming in about the whole ordeal.

When you put this on your sign, your menu, you celebrate your power over me. Your power to make me feel like shit just seeing it exists.

not to mention, it’s not in a real Asian language but a mock-up amalgation of “Asian sounds” that white ppl have used to hurt me & ppl who look like me for centuries

No. It’s lazy, gross, and terrible and you should change it immediately.

Yup… @SungaKonji made a point – a whole group of people discussed and okayed this. That’s what kills me! No one thought it was a bad idea!!

No and listing “cumming soon” in your bio shows this is on purpose. pic.twitter.com/P5jbPG25jY

Terrible. If management are so insulated from reality, it’s hard to imagine that anything else about this place could be competent, interesting, exciting, inclusive, or fresh. Change your name, absolutely hire ‘So It’s 2017’ consultants, rethink everything from the ground up.

This is offensive and disgusting to women and those of Asian decent. Can’t wait to watch your business fail.

Well, I’m sure the business will continue and the owners will remain to profit. I wonder if they’ll come to their senses and do the right thing with a name change. We’ll just have to wait and see how this one plays out. If I ever make it to Australia I’ll tell you one thing, I’ll be skipping this place. That hurts me a lot too. Since a small child, I’ve had big dreams of munching on some fire ramen on the coast of South Africa. Sad day when a dream dies.
